Entrepreneurs are always reading. And always learning. They are always looking to increase their skills and mindset. I’ll be honest, reading was NEVER my favorite past time. But since fully diving into the entrepreneurial journey, I am TOTALLY addicted to personal development, mindset, strategy, and getting as much information as I possibly can. I get asked all the time, what I am reading or what I recommend. So I thought I would take a min to share with you my top 5 (or more) fave personal development/business books I have read thus far.
#1: 4 Disciplines of Execution by Sean Covey
This was one of the first biz books I read. I had attended a conference that was centered around the teachings in this book and immediately had to dive in. This book is definitely centered around more of the corporate world and larger companies with teams. But the 4 Disciplines can be applied to every business.
If you are looking for a framework on HOW to EXECUTE and achieve your Wildly Important Goals (WIGS as they refer to them) this book is the one that will help you do that. It speaks to not only the action steps, but the behaviors that influence the actions and how to get a team on board to help. There was so much to be learned in this book. The 4 part framework that it lays out is easy to understand, implement, and gives you an incredible way to track your activity as well.
#2: Atomic Habits by James Clear
This was by far the BEST book I have read on habits, but it was so much more than that. It doesn’t just speak to the importance of habits, and that it takes 30, 60, 120 days to create them etc…We have all read those before. This book really dives into HOW to create a habit, but also how to create the action plan (are you seeing a trend in the books I like?) BEHIND the habit.
It speaks to the psychology behind a habit, why we need them, and how to make them easier to execute. My biggest takeaway from this book was when he spoke about habit stacking. Habit stacking is adding a new habit onto an existing habit that is currently in place. Such a simple concept yet completely game changing. I think I highlighted almost all of this book and I loved it so much, I did a FB live debrief on it. It’s really powerful and a must read for anyone in business, but also just life in general.
#3: Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes
Funny and honest with a bit of a slap in the face is how I would describe this one. Has this description caught your eye? This was one I could NOT PUT DOWN!! I absolutely love Shonda’s perspective on showing up, moving beyond our fears, acknowledging them, and pushing past them. But also how she shared how much the experience changed her as a person.
This isn’t just about saying “Yes” to everything that comes your way, but she also shares about saying “YES” to saying no when appropriate. As much as you would think someone as successful as she wouldn’t have any reason to feel self doubt, to want to hide, to feel ashamed and embarrassed, she shares in so much honesty and authenticity about how all the money and success in the world doesn’t make your life as happy as people often view. This is one that will be a constant re – read on my list.
#4: The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks
Sticking with mindset books, The Big Leap will help you see and push past your comfort zone. This one is allll about comfort zones and how much they are hindering your success. In the Big Leap, you will learn about how most of the time you are living in your Zone of Excellence (which sounds amazing, right?) and that the Zone of Excellence is keeping you safe. It keeps you in your comfort zone, hidden from your fears. This is where you feel good and confident, but this book is about moving past all of that and moving into your Zone of Genius. Pushing yourself past the comfort zones and limiting beliefs. If you are ready to move past what is keeping you safe and stuck, this book is a must read.
#5: Profit First by Mike Michalowicz
I would be remiss if I didn’t speak about a book pertaining to money… especially profit. However, don’t let this name of this book fool you. This is not just another book teaching you that Income minus Expense equals Profit. That is what we already know. This book is a complete system that will teach you HOW to pay yourself first. To take the profit off the top and let your business work and grow on what is left, not vice versa.
This will completely change how you manage your finances in your business if you adapt this system. It takes a bit of time to get used to and set up, but at the end of the year when you have profit sitting in your bank account it will be worth it. Be prepared to do some work if you are going to read this one, but it is totally worth it.
The 5 business books above would be my top 5 that I feel I have gained the most out of but I have a few others worth mentioning for sure.
A few of my other faves: 10X Rule (the 10X Conference is amazing as well, highly recommend), UnF*ck Yourself (The Scottish Accent of the Author when listening through Audible makes this one much better listened to vs read, in my opinion), 5 Second Rule, The ONE Thing, and Four Agreements.
I try to read a nice blend of mindset books and business strategy books. I think it is important to not only be reading and learning books to increase our skill set, but your mindset is equally important to business.
Do you have any other books you have read that have been life changing for you? And just out of curiosity, do you prefer to read on your Kindle or hard copy books? I always use to love hard copy but now I am totally addicted to my Kindle. I love that I literally always have a book on hand that I can pick up and read anywhere with just the app on my phone!
